About Us

After undergoing emergency neurosurgery for a herniated disc during the 2020 pandemic, Beth, founder of That’s Humerus, was deeply touched by the level of medical care she received by her surgeon, nurses, and hospital staff. Since she couldn’t have family by her side, her medical team stepped up to support and laugh with her through the difficult days as she healed.

When she was discharged, she wondered how she could thank them. Being a certified medical illustrator, she sketched out a quick thank you card with a custom illustration of an evil herniated disc as a joke. She wondered why finding gifts and cards for a medical audience with sophisticated humor was so hard to find. “Keep calm, I’m a doctor” and other cliché phrases for gifts hardly scratched the surface of what she wanted. So, why not create an online shop to fill this need?

That’s Humerus was founded out of her home office with her husband between caring for their toddler and preparing for their second baby. The shop went live in July of 2021.
